T’e’arminator – A Soundtrack

We all know how tough and solid The Terminator is. He seldom expresses any strong emotions, given the fact that he is not human. During the climax of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, he asks John Connor, his creator, to destroy him by lowering him into a pool of molten steel. It is a very emotional moment in the film with John Connor hugging the Terminator and crying his heart out, begging him to reconsider his decision. The Terminator simply says “I know now why you cry. But it’s something I can never do” . Despite being a machine, the Terminator understands human emotions and the value of life. This serves as the inspiration for the soundscape and is the point from which it begins.

The concept and idea of this soundscape is to convey to the listener the overwhelming anguish and sorrow that the Terminator feels during his final moments. Being a highly sophisticated and complex robot does not stop The Terminator from shedding a tear and this makes him human. Hence the title for this soundscape is Te’a’rminator.

Tranquil – A Soundtrack

What do we expect a man to feel when he is about to meet his end in five minutes? Fear? Panic? Regret? This soundscape/music composition addresses a scenario where a soldier is at war and has been hit and surrounded by enemy forces. He knows that his time has come and embraces the inevitable. He knows no fear, panic or regret. Instead, he takes a deep breath, closes his eyes and recalls two things that are dearest to him – family and country. An entire lifetime flashes in front of his eyes and what he sees and feels is what I portray through this soundtrack.

All the orchestral instruments and a few voices were played and recorded by me using M-Audio’s Axiom Mini Air 32 MIDI keyboard. The guitars were played and recorded by me in a studio using a Fender Stratocaster and a Peavy Bandit 112 amplifier. All other sounds were outsourced from http://www.freesound.org.

ToneZoned – An Android Application.

Introduction:

Consider the following scenarios:

  1. You are in an important official meeting and your phone suddenly blares out. Embarrassing to say the least. Not a situation anyone would want to be in.
  2. There is an emergency and your family tries to contact you. Since you just left work, your phone is still on the ‘Silent’ mode. Not a pretty situation either.

ToneZoned came up as an idea during a brainstorming session. We were a team of four and wanted to build a project that combined our love for sounds and engineering. It was developed to tackle the kind of scenarios mentioned above. It works on the concept of wireless internet/WiFi, which is highly prevalent in today’s world. Fear not, since it works in the absence of a WiFi Network as well!

Using this application, users can configure their phones’ sound profiles based on a WiFi connection. When the phone connects to a WiFi network for the first time, users will be prompted to set their desired sound profiles for that particular WiFi network. On connecting to the same WiFi the next time, these settings will apply. If there is a change in their routine, they can create ‘events’, where they can set an alarm and a sound profile. As soon as the alarm triggers, the sound profile changes to whatever has been set by them. All of these configurations can be modified and customized at any time.

Although many applications allow users to control sound profiles, these are mostly based on the phone’s location. ‘Situation sensitivity’ is the key word here.

The following sections illustrate some of the stages and processes of  building the application.

Software used:

  1. Eclipse IDE
  2. Java
  3. Android Development Tools (ADT)
  4. Android Development Kit
  5. SQLite

Module Descriptions:

  1. Add WiFi: This is the main module of the application. When the users first open the application, this is the module that they see and access. Here, all the WiFi networks that have been detected will be available for the user to configure.
  2. Configure WiFi: On detecting an unconfigured WiFi network, this module provides the options of ‘Ringer’, ‘Silent’ and ‘Vibrate’. This is not a permanent set up and can be modified by the users when required.
  3. View WiFi: Here, all the WiFi networks that have been configured will be displayed to the users. It displays them in list view. There are options which allow the user to modify existing WiFi network settings.
  4. Set Event: This is an add on to the automated changing of sound profiles. It adds flexibility to the entire application by giving the users the power to create events for unanticipated/out-of-routine happenings. Here the users can set the time at which they want a profile change to take place. An alarm is set at the required time. As the alarm triggers, the profile changes but no disturbance is caused to the users.

O Re Mitwa

O Re Mitwa, meaning ‘Oh Dear Friend’, is a Hindi song that talks about living in the moment and facing life’s challenges with a smile. This was the first song that I wrote and recorded with Shaurya and it will have a special place in our hearts!

The instrumentation for this is as follows:

Recorded and mastered in Logic Pro X.

Composition, arrangement and guitars: Kranthi(self).

Vocals: Roshan Nammi and Rohan Nammi.

Drums/percussions: Madhukesh Ayyagari.

Bass/keyboards: Raunaq George.

Beyond The Skies

Change is inevitable. Hardships are inescapable. We all miss our blissful childhood at some point in our lives. Beyond the Skies traces the journey of one such man, who yearns to go back to his younger, carefree days. He is overwhelmed by his present and is at the point of breaking down completely. Eventually, he realizes something of great importance.

The instrumentation for this is as follows:

Recorded and mastered in Logic Pro X.

Composition, arrangement and guitars: Kranthi(self).

Vocals: Roshan Nammi and Rohan Nammi.

Drums/percussions: Madhukesh Ayyagari.

Bass/keyboards: Raunaq George.

Hallowed Be Thy Name – Iron Maiden

Perhaps one of the greatest songs ever written in the history of heavy metal. Vocals that are out of this world, twin guitars that mesmerize you from both sides, drum sections that are as tight as they can get and a bass that sets your heart pounding, Hallowed Be Thy Name is a work of pure genius.

Here, I start midway and cover both the solos till the end of the song. I chose to cover the live version because well, it’s Iron Maiden after all!

Recorded and mastered in Garageband. Video was edited using Adobe Premier Clip.

The Trooper – Iron Maiden

You can literally feel the gallop on this one! The entire Piece of Mind album is a masterpiece with the Trooper being the icing on the cake. Solid rhythm and harmonies that are perfection personified.

A cover of this blistering track in collaboration with our drummer Madhukesh!

Recorded and mastered using EZdrummer 2, Reaper and Garageband. Video was assembled using VideoPad editor.
